Celebrating the American Garden: Bringing People and Plants Together

May 4 - 7, 2008

Keynote speaker, Lynden Miller, director of The Conservatory Garden in New York’s Central Park, will speak about garden design with an emphasis on plants that can be used to soften and civilize city life and change the way people behave and treat each other.  Applying Lynden’s philosophy on a smaller scale, other symposium speakers, including horticulturist, author, lecturer and radio personality Andre Viette, and, Bob Lyons, director of graduate programs at Longwood Gardens, will discuss how to create gardens that “nourish the soul”. Topics of discussion will include seasonal planting, mixed borders, and effective combinations of plants.

Hydroponic Gardening & Chesapeake Master Gardener Monthly Meeting

Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 9:30 AM

On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., the Major Hillard Library with the Chesapeake Extension Services will co-sponsor a gardening lecture entitled, Hydroponic Gardening, at the Major Hillard Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy, N. Mike Huff will be the guest speaker. The program should last around 45 minutes with a Question and Answer session.

Are you intrigued by the thought of soil-less gardening? Do you want to produce greater plant yield in a less amount of time? Does the prospect of fewer bug infestations, funguses, or diseases entice your interest? If these points have caught your attention, then attend this program to learn more about hydroponic gardening. During the program, the speaker will cover the following points: what is hydroponic gardening, how to set up a home hydroponic system, what you can grow easily in your home hydroponic system vs. what it more difficult to grow, common problems, basic costs vs. growing conventionally, and organic hydroponics.

This program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to participate in any program offered by the Chesapeake Public Library System. For more information contact the Major Hillard Library at 410-7075.
